This development is on the site of the former Queen Alexandra Hospital. It is very tucked away and discovering it feels like quite a find. The buildings and gardens have the feel of Park Court in Sydenham by Gibberd, with classic white rendered pavilions set in a rambling, secluded garden. The gardens blew me away: so well done and with many unexpected and charming features: I wonder if they were designed by the architect, or by someone else in the 30s, or indeed someone later on? The discreet entrance on Millfield Lane is signalled by a bespoke lamppost on a pier with the building’s name on. The buildings have a lot of exposed pipework which detracts slightly (probably a later addition?) but this has been painted out fairly successfully. Interestingly, the ‘fronts’ of the buildings are the hidden, garden side - as if the glory was saved for the residents alone. The Crittalls are still there, painted dark grey which really works for me, and sitting on neat little green tiled bullnose cills. This architect also designed a 30s stand at the original Arsenal Stadium; the Arsenal website has his surname down as ‘Bennie’ but sadly he is no relation...
