East Acton Court

1936

Architect: G A Jellicoe

PreviousNext
12

It was sad visiting this modest little building just off the A40. The original brickwork has been rendered over and painted, and the Crittalls replaced with inevitable landlord’s best uPVC. Jellicoe’s nice little curved flourishes in plan are still there, but no doubt less elegant dressed in relentlessly orthogonal plastic. More of a travesty is the erased landscape which Jellicoe would have designed around this building. There are a few mature trees to the road side but the rest of the open space is a wasteland and the parking must also be an addition. The very helpful and friendly residents I spoke to mourned the diminishing community feel: the loss of allotments and the removal of the stairs leading from the back of the first floor flats down to the communal garden had made a detrimental difference. Come on Notting Hill!
