Born in Austria, educated in Vienna. Studied piano and sculpture and designed own furniture. Designed social housing in Austria and was invited to England in 1928 by Raymond Unwin to advise LCC on design of housing and slum clearance. Visiting professor of interior design at U of Pennsylvania 1949-51. Directed urban planning conferences in the USA as well as advising US Housing Authority.
