The Grampians is a very imposing and sculptural block just off the Shepherd’s Bush roundabout. The main entrance sequence has been designed to impress with its welcoming recessed layout, moulded concrete details and built-in shopfronts at ground and first floor. It seems fitting that the shops house a tailor and hairdresser as well as a letting agent and publishers - all a city-dwelling gentleman still needs right on his doorstep. The rear and courtyard elevations of the building are another story - utilitarian but starkly impressive cliff faces of brick and metalwork details, with a couple of fun triangular balcony flourishes on the sides. The courtyard facing flats are served by enclosed access decks where original signage can be found. The lobby is very modest but still retains a period feel, with black and white paintwork and a lovely old clock, as well as a porter’s niche. The Crittalls are still there but the whole building feels a little worn out and in need of love.
